Once again I come away from the Wild West Film Fest with a feeling of shock and dissapointment.

The 2008 Scare Factor edition was nothing but a collection of rip-offs. We saw eveything from HOSTEL to THE GRUDGE, BLAIR WITCH to EVIL DEAD on Sunday night. I’m sure the film makers thought of them as homages, but the same tired tricks that dont work in major horror films were on display Sunday and, (guess what?) they didnt work in the short films either.

There were only a handful of decent films in the whole bunch, and most of them got ignored by the judges. Kudos to the makers of MY GUARDIAN ANGEL, which I did feel was the scarriest one there. But what about other criteria for a film? What about being well shot? What about creating atmosphere? What about creativitiy? And GASP! WHAT ABOUT A COHERENT PLOT!?! Why can’t you reward films that do those things right instead of encouraging a slew of carbon copies?

I’m sorry if I am offending the folk who made these films. I’m sure you worked just as hard on yours as the others did theirs. I understand this isnt the OSCARS. And I’m sure that when THAT astute awards ceremony comes around I’ll be dissapointed by the choices of others again. But considering the festival is now controlled by KU Filmworks, I was really hoping the judging would be done by someone who knew something about film…

    The winners this year were:
    First Place
    Just One of Those Things

    Second Place
    Guardian Angel

    Third Place
    Alpha Tape.

Great work to everyone who entered. I hope the Wild West People decide to put the videos up sometime.

In the mean time I believe Guardian Angel is on youtube.
If you want to see Just One of Those Things, I have it up on my facebook account, so just look me up and I’ll send you the link.
